Adhering to the developed classification of journal periodicals, the author of the final qualifying work conducted a study of journals related to the Russian Geographical Society.

The oldest magazine, which dates back to 1865, is Izvestia of the Russian Geographical Society. It is noteworthy that since then the magazine has never been closed. However, the publication is not very popular, it is addressed to narrow specialists and is published in a fairly small circulation - about 130 copies.

As for thematic features, Izvestia of the Russian Geographical Society publishes materials related to modern geography, as well as related sciences - articles on the problems of the national economy, the use of limited natural resources, etc. appear on the pages of the publication. The editors of the magazine are not permanent, as a rule, The authors of the articles are eminent scientists, geographers and specialists in other sciences.

1. in terms of the nature of the presentation and the type of audience, this magazine is classified as elite, since the publication is aimed at a narrow audience - for specialist readers. The pages publish scientific articles, as well as reviews by scientists;

2. in terms of volume, the magazine can be classified as thick, because the number of pages in each issue varies from approximately 100 to 200;

3. in terms of frequency, “News of the Russian Geographical Society” is published rarely - once every 2 months;

4. the magazine has a small circulation (128 copies);

5. In terms of its functional purpose, the journal is classified as scientific, because it is addressed to the specialist reader with the aim of transmitting scientific information, ensuring the transition of science to a higher level.

Another journal of the Russian Geographical Society is called “GEOGRAPHY, ENVIRONMENT, SUSTAINABILITY” (abbreviated as “GES”, translated as “geography, environment, sustainable development”). It publishes materials related to geography and the environment.

The magazine has regular sections, such as environmental management, sustainable regional development, health and the environment, global and regional environmental and climate change, etc.

A distinctive feature of all materials published in GES is relevance, the global scale of the problems being studied, and a fairly informative test with the necessary number of illustrations.

The authors of the articles are experts in the field of geography and related sciences; in addition, the journal provides space for publications by young scientists. The GES journal represents a kind of field where scientific discussions and exchange of opinions between specialists take place.

The magazine is addressed to specialists in the field of geography and ecology, not only Russian, but also foreign.

It is also noteworthy that the language in which materials are published is chosen by a special editorial board - either English or French. This is due to the fact that these languages are working languages in many international organizations.

According to the proposed classification, the journal “GES”:

1. in terms of the nature of the presentation and the type of audience, it belongs to elite publications, since it will be difficult for an unprepared person who is not an expert in the field of geography to perceive the material published on the pages of the magazine;

2. in terms of volume, the magazine belongs to thin publications, since each issue consists of no more than 100 pages;

4. in terms of functional purpose, “GES” is a scientific journal, starting from the topics covered and ending with the purpose of the publication.

The Russian Geographical Society magazine, entitled “Ice and Snow,” publishes materials on glaciology (the science that studies the properties of glaciers) and cryolithology (the science of ice formation or disappearance of ice in the earth’s crust).

The journal was published in 1961 under the title “Materials of Glaciological Research”. In 2010, the publication acquired a different name, which the magazine still bears today.

The magazine “Ice and Snow” has regular columns - “Glaciers and Ice Sheets”, “Travel and Discoveries”, “Applied Problems”, “Reviews and Chronicles”, etc.

The publication classification is as follows:

1. in terms of the nature of the presentation and the type of audience, “Ice and Snow” is an elite magazine; magazine publication language

2. the publication is thick in volume, because the issue contains about 240 pages;

3. by frequency - the magazine is published 4 times a year;

4. In terms of its functional purpose, the magazine is scientific, since it is quite difficult to understand; the materials are written in scientific language using a large number of terms and complex syntactic structures.

Among the journals of the Russian Geographical Society there is a publication designed for those interested in folklore and geography: scientists, museum workers, local historians, teachers and professors. This magazine is called "Living Antiquity".

It is noteworthy that one of the oldest publications of the Russian Geographical Society was published twice. The magazine “Living Antiquity” was first published at the end of the 19th century, but was closed a few years later. Publishing resumed only at the end of the 20th century.

1. By the nature of the presentation and the type of audience, the magazine is intended for a wide audience, however, the materials published on its pages are quite difficult to understand, which gives every reason to classify the publication as elite. And at the same time, the articles are written in clear, understandable language in an accessible form, and this is a feature of a mass publication;

2. by frequency - the magazine “Living Antiquity” is published 4 times a year;

One of the most popular and famous magazines in Russia - “Around the World” - is one of the most striking projects of the Russian Geographical Society. This oldest publication was founded in St. Petersburg in 1861.

Classification of the magazine "Around the World":

1. in terms of the nature of the presentation and the type of audience, the publication is massively popular. This is confirmed by the clarity and simplicity in the presentation of materials, the variety of topics covered;

2. In terms of volume, the magazine is considered thick (140-160 pages);

3. by frequency - the magazine “Around the World” is published once a month;

4. The publication's circulation is quite large - about 250 thousand copies;

5. In terms of its functional purpose, “Around the World” is classified as popular science.
