Sending resumes to employers' HR departments. Examples of cover letters for resumes Rely on the facts

In today's article we want to take a closer look at how to end a resume. A classic resume has a clearly defined structure:

  • Contact Information
  • experience
  • Education and further education
  • Professional skills
  • additional information

If everything is more or less clear with the main sections, then difficulties may arise with the logical conclusion of the summary.

It is necessary to take into account the fact that “basement” resumes are the least read. Some recruiters may not even get to the end of the resume. Running his eyes from top to bottom, the recruiter picks out the key points of the work experience, something does not suit him, he closes the resume and moves on to the next one. Hence the conclusion: the end of the resume should carry the least information load. Make sure that key information related to the professional field is included in the main sections. Even better - on the top half of the page.

Standard resume ending options

In the final part of the resume, it is advisable to place information about you as a person. It can be:

  • Interests and hobbies. Try to avoid mentioning exotic pastimes - it is unknown what reaction this will cause in the reader. Something neutral is better - active recreation, reading, theater, photography, time with family, volunteer work, etc. But, for example, keep your passion for esotericism, raw food diet, powerlifting, etc. to yourself.
  • Sports achivments. The presence of a rank clearly speaks in favor of your discipline and determination.
  • Family status. An optional item, although in some companies a family person will be a more desirable candidate for a vacancy. Or, conversely, if the job involves a large number of business trips, preference may be given to an applicant without a family.
  • Positive and negative qualities. Optional item for resume. However, if you decide to indicate them, it is advisable that approximately equal numbers of advantages and disadvantages be indicated. Otherwise, you will get the impression that you are trying with all your might to please, which can be off-putting. Indicate advantages that are relevant to the job for which you are applying. Those. these should be the qualities that will allow you to be most effective in a specific position. Examples of positive qualities: responsibility, independence, desire to help people, optimism, stress resistance, diligence, result orientation, etc. Negative qualities should be as neutral as possible, smoothly turning into your advantages from the employer’s point of view. Examples of negative qualities in a resume: self-criticism, perfectionism, excessive emotionality, workaholism, etc.
  • Presence/absence of bad habits. Rather, it is their absence. There are more and more vacancies for which the line “no bad habits” in your resume can be an additional plus in your favor.
  • Availability/absence of a driver's license and car. It matters if the work involves traveling around the city. And your willingness to use your personal car during working hours may be perceived positively by a potential employer.

All of the above does not directly characterize you from a professional point of view, but it gives the employer a more complete picture of you as a person. You will have to work in a team.

How else can you end your resume?

Alternatively, an indication recommendations for you from previous employers. Here you can either immediately indicate the contact details of a person who is ready to give you a recommendation (of course, having previously agreed), or simply indicate the possibility of providing recommendations upon request.

In order not to overload the top of the resume with details, some of the contact information can be moved to the end. For example, it would be appropriate to indicate Skype or a link to your portfolio at the bottom.

Good afternoon, dear friend!

Today we are looking at the question of what to write to an employer when sending a resume so as to attract the attention of the recipient and receive an invitation to a face-to-face meeting.

The text accompanying the resume is usually called a cover letter. I assume you know about this. The accompanying text should not be compiled anyhow, but according to certain rules.

Purposes of the accompanying text:

  • minimum - arouse interest in opening your resume
  • maximum - dial your number and invite to a meeting

In order for the recipient’s reaction to be as close to the task as possible, I recommend:

  1. structure your letter into blocks
  2. use certain figures of speech

In this article, that's what we'll do. Let's compose one of the text options, which I call a capture letter or a boomerang letter.

Let's go in order:

Letter structure

The full version of the capture letter is suitable if you contact a person by email, bypassing the scripts of work sites (more on this at the end of the article)

Briefly, the structure of the letter contains 6 small sequential blocks.

  1. Greetings
  2. The position you are applying for
  3. How did you hear about the vacancy and why did it interest you?
  4. Proposal to consider your candidacy and reasons for this
  5. The main idea is how you can be useful to the company
  6. Call to action

A structured letter will allow the recruiter or manager to save time, becauseit answers basic questions.

Moreover, in the letter there is an opportunity to explain , why did you, for example, decide onchange the field of activity or are ready to move to a lower position after driving.

Example text

(1) Hello Andrei!

My name is Sergey Orlov.

(2) This is about vacancies for Head of Recruitment Department. It is published on the company's corporate website.

(3) The vacancy interested me in promising tasks that intersect with my career plans.

(4) Please consider my candidacy.

From 2013 to present I work at the Phoenix companyas Head of the Recruitment Department.

Before that he worked for Severstal, SUEK, and Utkonos companies.

General experience in the position Head of Recruitment Department - 7 years.

Specific experience related to the tasks of the position advertised in your company:

At the Phoenix company, I successfully implemented a project to recruit delivery drivers, 800 people within two and a half months.

(5) I believe that this project of mine is similar to project “X”, which is planned in your company.

Andrey, I would like to draw your attention to the fact that my project was implemented at costs that were 30% lower than standard for such projects.

I believe that my experience is fully consistent with this position. Yours summary I am attaching it to the letter.

(6) Andrey, with your permission, a question:

Can we schedule an in-person meeting in the coming week?

If yes, I look forward to your call with an appointment date and time. Contact number below.

Andrey, if you don’t mind, I’ll call you back on February 27 in the afternoon.

Do you agree?

Thank you,

Best regards, Sergey Orlov, t. +7 (916)xxx-xx-xx

The numbers in brackets mean the numbers of the structural blocks that we talked about just above. Of course, you don’t need to write them in the text.

Speech structures

a) Name

If you noticed, yours truly uses addressee several times in the body of the letter. It is important. The use of the name is the key point in .

If, for some reason, you do not know the name, try by all available means to find out.

An unaddressed letter starting with simply “hello” has many times less chances of success.

c) We are talking about...

Tell us right away what position you are talking about. The recruiter may have more than a dozen of them.

d) from 2013 to present...

Current or last place of work and position.

e) Before this I worked...

If you worked in branded companies, be sure to name them. Try to very briefly summarize the best experiences you have that are relevant to the job opening. One, maximum two sentences.

f) I would like to draw your attention...

The main idea that may interest an employer. Numbers related to costs, profits, and revenues have a magical effect on business people.

g) with your permission, a question...

The question itself and the subsequent comment are nothing more than a call to action.

Your intentions to meet are correct and unobtrusive.

h) Do you agree?

How would you respond? Why not? With this ending of the letter, the likelihood of an invitation increases significantly.

If you write on a work website

It is clear that if you write in a script for a working website, the text will change slightly. You do not need to introduce yourself, name the vacancy, you do not know the name of the person who will receive the letter. It would not be very appropriate to refer to the fact that “you were recommended to contact...”. It is also clear where you learned about the vacancy if you respond to it on the site.

For the rest, you can take the concept of a “capture” letter as a basis.

  1. letter subject
  2. your email address

So, let me take my leave for today. If you have any questions, please feel free to post them in the comments section.

Thank you for your interest in the article.

  2. Write a comment (at the bottom of the page)
  3. Subscribe to blog updates (form under social media buttons) and receive articles on the topics you choose to your email.

Have a nice day!

A cover letter is an integral additional part of a resume when applying for a job in a large foreign or domestic organization with Western principles.

If you are applying for a position in a foreign company with a global brand, then you need to approach writing and drafting a cover letter with all responsibility.

According to generally accepted rules, a cover letter is drawn up:

  • on a separate form if the resume is sent in printed form;
  • in the body of the email if the resume is sent by email;
  • details, title, date, name and address of the recipient must be formatted in accordance with the rules for writing business letters.

A cover letter for a resume is usually provided on a separate form with the applicant’s details or in the body of an email (message).

Here's an example of writing a short cover letter:

Option 1.

Dear Alexander, in response to your vacancy for “real estate specialist” posted in the “Personnel” newspaper, I am sending my resume. I would be very grateful if you do not ignore it.

Sincerely,
Kolesnikov Maxim, phone +7-985-23-56-89

Option 2.

Good afternoon, Alexander.

In the attached resume file. I am applying for a position as a lawyer. Source of information about the vacancy www.kadry.ru I am ready to provide any additional information necessary for consideration of my candidacy.

Option 3.

Dear Sirs,

Please consider my resume for the vacancy of real estate specialist, realtor. I will be glad to receive an invitation from you for an interview.

Sincerely, Maxim Kolesnikov, phone +7-985-23-56-89

A more detailed cover letter is written according to a similar pattern.

For greater clarity, you can familiarize yourself with a sample cover letter for a resume.

Let's highlight the main points that must be reflected in the extended form of the cover letter:

1. The proposed position (as shown in example No. 3, it is possible to indicate two related positions) for which a resume is provided.

3. Offer the employer to consider your candidacy.

4. Briefly, but accurately and meaningfully, make an excerpt from your resume in order to justify the correspondence of your professional and personal qualities to the position for which you are applying.

5. It is imperative to indicate your readiness to work with dedication and professional growth in the direction specified in the vacancy, in this particular organization.

For example:

Over the past years, I have been successfully operating in my chosen area as part of the state veterinary and customs regulatory authorities, I have established connections and experience of cooperation with both the largest Russian food industry enterprises and leading foreign suppliers. The attached resume will give you an idea of my professional experience, qualifications and potential opportunities.

For example:

All my work experience, professional knowledge and skills, as well as expectations for further advancement lie in the field of active direct sales and working with clients (both at the executive and administrative levels). At the moment, I have more than 5 years of experience in sales on the B2B market in the manufacturing field, as well as management experience in this area during the last year of work. At my last job, as head of the sales department, I was personally responsible for the activities and results of the sales service in the B2B field (medical and cosmetology equipment).

6. Willingness and desire to undergo a personal interview or an interview at a company, during which you will be able to more fully and accurately provide information about yourself.

For example:

I would be happy to accept the offer to meet and tell you a little more about your work experience and possible potential. You can contact me by phone... or email...

Sincerely,…

If you are interested, I will be happy to answer all your questions during the interview. You can contact us by phone. Thank you in advance for your attention and time devoted to my candidacy.

Sincerely,…

Today, the Internet is the most popular tool for finding a job. The most basic way is to leave a response to a vacancy on a personnel website with just one click. But when it comes to sending resumes by email, job seekers often make mistakes. We will tell you how to correctly send your resume to an employer so that it does not go unnoticed.

Subject line when sending your resume

Job seekers often neglect the most important rule - to format the subject line correctly when sending a resume by email. Do not leave this field empty under any circumstances: without a subject, your letter may end up in spam, or the employer simply will not notice it.

The topic should be brief but contain the necessary information. Examples of successful topics: “Response to the vacancy of an assistant designer”, “Resume of the chief accountant”, “Resume of A. N. Ivanova for the position of translator”.

Sometimes the employer asks you to indicate something specific in the subject line of the letter (for example, a vacancy code). Be sure to pay attention to this so that you are not considered absent-minded.

What to write to an employer when sending a resume

You should not send the employer a blank letter with an attached resume file. Having a cover letter is not only considered a sign of good manners, but also shows your sincere interest in the proposed position.

Let's be honest: a resume is not the most important thing when applying for a job. A person with unique experience and competencies will be invited for an interview, even if his resume is written on a napkin. It’s another matter if he doesn’t yet belong to the category of rare super-professionals. Then the chance to meet competitors in the fight for your dream job increases, and the quality of your resume comes to the fore.

In this article, we have collected the top tips for writing the perfect resume. For simplicity, we have arranged the material into sections that await you when filling out the resume form on hh.ru.

Photos and contacts - business

A photo on your resume will always be a plus, even if the position does not involve communicating with people. A photo will make your resume personalized: it’s easier to notice, and a response with a photo is harder to miss or delete. But you need to choose a portrait for your resume critically: a bad photo can ruin everything. A professional portrait photo, business-like and neutral, is best.

In the contacts section, pay attention to the mailbox - it must correspond to your professional status. Address [email protected] will emphasize a non-business approach to work. And here [email protected]- already better.

Some applicants indicate their home address in their resume, down to a specific apartment. It is enough to indicate the city or the nearest metro station, for example, “Mytishchi” or “the village of Mansurovo in the Kursk region.”

Check your salary against the market

It is not necessary to indicate your desired salary on your resume, but if you do, employers will not come to you with inappropriate offers. Universal advice: write an amount 15–20% greater than what you earn now. This will give you the opportunity to bargain without compromising your own interests. We talked in more detail about how to determine the desired income in one of the articles.

Check your expectations with the average salary in the market: look at vacancies, at statistics by region and professional field. A salary that is inflated by 40% or more will definitely scare off a recruiter. You can find out the average salary in the market for your city and your professional area using “How Much Recipient”.

This is what “Salary Recipient” looks like. HeadHunter is a simple service that helps you compare your salary with the market one.

The exception is the resume of top managers. Executive salaries are calculated differently from company to company, so specific expectations can be daunting for employers.

experience

If you are not a beginner, then experience is the main part of your resume. Please approach this section with particular care.

  1. The experience should appear seamless, that is, without long career breaks. If there were breaks, then they should have an explanation: maternity leave, doing business, freelancing, and so on. We talked more about how to write about experience gaps in this article.
  2. If you change jobs more than once a year, the employer will be wary of this. You have been promoted - write about it in one block.
  3. Pay attention to the last three years of work, this is of primary interest to employers. We can talk very briefly about the initial stages of my career and what happened more than 10 years ago.
  4. If the company is unknown on the market, indicate its type of activity. Not just LLC “Horns and Hooves”, but “Black Sea branch of the Arbatov office for the procurement of horns and hooves.” The company's activities can be briefly described in the responsibilities block.
  5. In the headings, write generally accepted market job titles: for example, “commercial director” instead of “head of the purchasing and sales coordination department.” The same goes for the resume title. Often, applicants copy the last position into it, which is incorrect: the title should reflect the essence of the job, and not the entry in the employment record. For example, “project manager” seems more universal than “managing director of a business unit.” Employers will find such a resume faster through search.
  6. Never copy a list of responsibilities from a job description. Highlight the most important ones and write them down in clear language, without red tape. For example, “optimization of business processes” instead of “implementation of project activities to optimize business processes.” Five to ten tasks will be enough.
  7. In addition to your job responsibilities, be sure to include your specific accomplishments and performance results (for example, “developed corporate business process control standards with the IT department”).

Avoid general phrases like “was the hardest working employee in the department” - this is an opinion that cannot be verified, so it is not of interest to the employer. But “became the best employee of the department at the end of the year” is a useful line.

Sometimes applicants describe working in a particular company as if they were writing a chapter from their own biography: “Here I started my career from lower positions, diligently seeking promotion” or “At a quick glance, you might think that the work was easy for me, but in fact it was smooth vice versa". These examples are the standard for how not to describe an experience. A resume works if the employer takes a few seconds to understand the experience and understand that this candidate is worth a closer look. You can demonstrate your enthusiasm in your cover letter.

Education

All educational courses indicated in the resume must be related to professional activities. It is better to miss something than to add dubious certificates - for example, about massage courses - if this knowledge is not needed in your work.

It’s always better to talk about the thorny path to the top at an interview. Therefore, you can skip studying at a technical school or vocational school if you have a higher education diploma in the same field.

key skills

Many applicants completely ignore this section, but in vain: often this is where the recruiter looks after getting to know the candidate’s experience and education. Key skills are specific knowledge and skills related directly to work processes. For lawyers this could be “Arbitration Courts” and “Corporate Law”, for a logistics manager “Working with customs authorities” and “Incoterms”, for a financier - “Statistical Analysis” and “Budgeting”, and so on.

The hh.ru system itself suggests the name of a particular skill, offering the shortest and most unified option - if possible, choose that one.

Avoid the obvious: don't say that you know Windows, Internet Explorer, or use email.

About me

Job seekers often confuse skills with personal qualities. This is how “Responsibility” or “Punctuality” end up in the skills. We advise you to write about these qualities in the “About Me” section and avoid platitudes. Instead of “Responsibility” and “Punctuality,” write “I am conscientious in completing tasks” and “I always meet promised deadlines.” The essence will not change, but the wording will be remembered.

In some cases, you can indicate personal qualities that are not directly related to the profession - this could be good physical shape or sporting achievements (“CCM in cross-country skiing”). The same applies to achievements in the intellectual sphere. If you are a city chess champion or won a programming Olympiad, this is interesting. If you're just into reading, then no. Add only what will help you get the job.

But in most cases it is better not to indicate a hobby at all. The recruiter is not interested in it, and exotic activities (like esotericism and even yoga) can completely scare away.

How to write

The final text of the summary should be a summary from which everything that, in principle, can be removed without loss of meaning has been removed: introductory words, epithets, participial and adverbial phrases, unnecessary verbal adjectives and nouns.

Badly: Was involved in organizing inventories in the company's divisions. Carried out activities on organizing tenders, in particular, preparing an extensive package of documents on this issue.
Better: Conducting inventories in company departments. Preparation of a package of documents for tenders.

The shorter and simpler the sentences, the better.

Keywords

Insert marker words into your resume so that a recruiter can find it through a search. For example, if you are an auditor and work with offshore companies, then the word “offshore” must appear in your resume.

Think about what keywords are relevant to your profession by imagining what terms a recruiter would use when searching for a resume. Use information from vacancies that interest you.

Covering letter

In the hh.ru system, a recruiter’s acquaintance with you always begins with a cover letter. It usually begins with a greeting phrase: “Hello! My name is Kondraty Stepanov and I am interested in your vacancy for a city mayor.”

In a new paragraph, briefly describe your achievements and main skills (“managed a department,” “participated in projects,” and so on). This paragraph should not be longer than three to four sentences.

The third paragraph is the key to the recruiter's heart. Write in it why you want to work for the company and why you think you are suitable. Try to avoid banal phrases like “I consider working in your company an opportunity for further development” - such phrases will make the recruiter suspect that you are copying the same cover letter for different vacancies.

Try to find information about the company on the Internet and indicate the fact of acquaintance with it in the cover letter. A good example: “I was especially interested in your projects in telecom: I have been working in b2b sales for 4 years and constantly interact with such clients.”

It is customary to end your resume with a phrase confirming your readiness to come for an interview: “Thank you for your attention and I will be glad to meet you to answer your questions!”

Checking your resume

If you want to show your resume to someone else, choose someone with experience as a recruiter - otherwise you are guaranteed to receive a bunch of unnecessary advice. If you are considering several different positions - for example, “sales manager” and “head of sales department” - create two different resumes.

Remember: every profession has its own characteristics. If lawyers are expected to have a perfect resume without a single mistake, then, for example, it is more important for accountants to indicate specific accounts and versions of 1C with which they worked. The differences between the “subcultures” of different professions do not allow us to make the only correct instructions for everyone. We have collected only general advice that applies to all applicants.

Good luck in your job search!
